Checking Whether A Blog is Dofollow or Nofollow?

What is a dofollow blog?

A dofollow blog means it allows search engine spiders to crawl and follow the link. For example, if you left a comment in a dofollow blog, then the search engine spiders will crawl your link (if you provided one) back to your site. Thus it will give some SEO benefits for your site.

What is a nofollow blog?

A nofollow blog means the opposite. It doesn’t allow search engine spiders to crawl and follow the link. Suppose you left a comment in a nofollow blog, the search engine spiders will not crawl your link and will not follow your link back to your site. Thus it won’t give you the SEO benefits for your site.

How to check whether a blog is dofollow or nofollow?

Actually it is pretty easy. If you use Internet Explorer, just follow the following steps to find out:

  • Open Internet Explorer browser
  • Type a blog url and hit enter
  • Click on a post title
  • Click on View from Internet Explorer’s menu bar
  • Choose Source
  • A source window will open, holding Ctrl and hit F to bring up a search box
  • Type nofollow in the text field
  • If you don’t see any in the comment section, then the blog is a dofollow blog

If you are using FireFox as your browser, then follow the following steps to find out:

  • Open FireFox browser
  • Type a blog url and hit enter
  • Click on a post title
  • Chick on View from FireFox menu bar
  • Choose Page Source
  • A source window will open, holding Ctrl and hit F to bring up a search bar
  • Type nofollow in the text field
  • If you don’t see any showing up in the comment section, then the blog is a dofollow blog

The above methods allow you to find out a dofollow or nofollow blog instantly without even using a third party’s tool. How do you find out whether a blog is dofollow or nofollow? Please leave a comment below.

  1. Now a days folks prefer their site comment section link as no follow link so do follow link is rare.

    • You are right about that, but mostly that is the way a blog was setup (in order to stop spammers). Also not everyone knows how to change nofollow to be dofollow.

  2. Nice info bos , thaks
    I will try it

  3. I still don’t understand this nofollow-do follow thing. I have been learning SEO for some weeks now and got a little confused mid part. I have the SEO toolbar and this little nofollow button that highlights comment links. It should tell me if a blog is dofollow or not. Well Ive been blog hunting and some comment links were highlighted, some weren’t. What does that mean?

    • Are you using Firefox browser or Flock browser? I know SEO toolbar is an extension that works on both browsers. All nofollow links are highlighted with a red background while others are dofollow links. Hope that helps.

  4. There is no such thing as a ‘dofollow’ attribute, and Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask will follow a liojk with a ‘nofollow’ attribute, only neither Google nor Bing will index it unless already indexed.

Yahoo and Ask ignore’nofollow’ altogether. So-calld ‘dofollow’ is simply the absence of the ‘nofollow’ attribute that Matt Cutts devised to prevent spambots leaving comments on blogs from links to them.

    • You are right about that dofollow is the absence of nofollow.
If you see something like: rel=nofollow or rel=external nofollow in the comment section, then the blog/site is a nofollow blog/site. However, if you don’t see rel=nofollow or if you see rel=external, then the blog/site is a dofollow blog/site.

  5. Thanks for your tutorial, to check if a blog is dofollow or not, i always use the plugin nofollow add on Firefox, very useful and simple.

  6. From this article i fully understand what is ‘nofollow’ and what is ‘dofollow’.Thanks for this nice article.I hope it will help others too.

  7. hey, why don’t you use “search status” as a tool to check it? “search status” is a firefox plugin. when you install it, you can select “highlight the nofollow link” by right clicking at the “@” icon.

  8. Actually very informative. Now a list of do follow blogs would be nice :0

  9. Wiki DoFollow

Looking for something to blog about? I saw this post about dofollow and thought you would like to know about a new site, Wiki Dofollow. It is a community compiled list of high ranking dofollow sites. That way, the list stays current.

    wikidofollow.org

If you want, be one of the first to blog about it. I am sure you know how difficult it is getting visitors to a new site. Your help spreading the word would be greatly appreciated!

    thanks.

  10. thanks
    its very useful

  11. Many thanks for the information, Ill go give it a try, i am sure there is a firfos plugin though that can do this for you.

    • I am sure there are a couple of the plugins that can help you find out dofollow or nofollow blogs/sites. However, some blogs/sites can not use plugins just like this one (myinternetstuff.wordpress.com), so I have to adapt the above methods. I could have used FireFox plugin too but that is another story.

  12. Great Post! So is this blog dofollow or nofollow? I hope its the former because I’m commenting here. 🙂

    • Unfortunately this is a nofollow blog. It is a free blog that I set up with WordPress.com. I can not make it a dofollow blog because I have no control of that.

  13. The Firefox extension can be downloaded from:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5687/

I’m a follower of dofollow thinking, but I also agree that nofollow attribute and pagerank sculpting is still very important.

  14. Interesting information…Thanks for the info. This is what I was looking for.

  15. Very useful information you have discussed, great tutorial. Thanks for sharing.

  16. I’ve been posting many comments from past but I don’t know this nofollow and dofollow stuff. I’m so thankful to Lanna that she shares this valuable information.

  17. Pingback: NoFollow oder DoFollow: Wie man es bequem herausfindet | SeoBunny.de

  18. Lanna…..wanted to thank you for the back link, although for the life of me I don’t know how I got it:) Visited your site a couple days ago while doing research on same. But I don’t recall making a post. Backlinks are so hard to build in a legitimate way, takes time and effort. So I want you to know I appreciate the effort on your part to not only explain it, but to promote it also. !! Thanks again.

  19. Lanna……Another question:) I’ve been using the Control / F method to check the source code on a bunch of sites. I seems that the ones I’m really interested in are all NoFollow. When I run the check however, it seems that some of the NoFollow hits that come up are related to other posts or adds on that site.

I’m not sharp enough with the reading of the Code to tell for sure, but is it possible that the blog or forum it’s self is a DoFollow, and i’m just getting hits on the NoFollow from certain other parts of the Code?

If so, do you know of an easy way to tell if I’m wasting my time or not posting?

    Thx again:)

    • Ok, maybe you should type comment first in the search bar to find the comment section, then type nofollow to find out whether the website is dofollow or nofollow.

If you want to use a third party tool, this is a good one:

      SEO Toolbar

It is a Firefox extension. That means you need to use it with Firefox browser. It is free, but you need to sign up a free account. It allows you to check out a lot of other things.

  20. Sounds like you know what you’re talking about. I’ll give it a whirl and see. Thanks so much.

  21. pls told me how to instal a tool bar bar for checking DF/NF and Page rank ?

  30. Hi, I have slightly different problem with my blog. I can find nofollow tag only in comments, but not in section with my content or in widgets. I think blog it is entirely set on nofollow, beacause none of my SEO utilities can recognise links from my blog. The theme is obviously nofollow and same stands for widgets (at least ones I use). Do you think switch to another theme is best option? Or can you recommend widget with ‘dofollow’ tag? Blog is set on free wordpress.com. I would like to have option with at least couple of dofollow links. Thank you in advance!

      • Yes, I don’t recall any theme that was used for WordPress is dofollow in comments. It was purposely made that way in order to stop people spamming for comments. However, that is a way to change nofollow to be dofollow. Just Google it you’ll find a couple of articles showing you how to do it. Good luck!
  31. Yes, it is easy to check if they are nofollow or dofollow blog, as always bringing you practical advice and then make positive changes.
